In 2017, Welsh Government published the Welsh learning strategy for Wales, Cymraeg 2050: A million Welsh speakers. This is the Welsh Ministers\u2019 strategy for the promotion and facilitation of the use of the Welsh language. It has been prepared in accordance with Section 78 of the Government of Wales Act 2006. This strategy supersedes A living language: a language for living \u2013 Welsh Language Strategy 2012\u201317, and its associated policy statement, A living language: a language for living \u2013 Moving forward. The Cymraeg 2050 Strategy sets out the Welsh Government\u2019s long-term approach to achieving the target of a million Welsh speakers by 2050.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The document states that \u201cthe culture sector itself has an important part to play to support the provision of Welsh language activities, and to develop events, products and activities which celebrate and raise awareness of our unique Welsh culture. It should also ensure that the culture of the Welsh language and Wales are both incorporated into important events as a part of how we present ourselves to the wider world\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mae\u2019r ddogfen yn datgan bod \u201cgan y sector diwylliant ei hun ran bwysig i\u2019w chwarae i gefnogi\u2019r ddarpariaeth o weithgareddau Cymraeg, ac i ddatblygu digwyddiadau, cynhyrchion a gweithgareddau sy\u2019n dathlu a chodi ymwybyddiaeth o\u2019n diwylliant Cymreig unigryw. \u2018Cymraeg 2050\u2019 contains two main targets (updated 2021-23):<\/p>\n\n\n\n
These targets provide a clear narrative for us all in Wales, in Government, in the public sector and as citizens: the Welsh language belongs to us all \u2013 the responsibility for its future likewise falls on us all. In addition, all we do under this Plan embraces both the letter and spirit of the Well-being of Future Generations (Wales) Act 2015 specifically: \u2018A Wales of vibrant culture and thriving Welsh language\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In order to realise this vision, \u2018Cymraeg 2050\u2019 is based on three strategic themes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Between The Trees believes that exposure to the Welsh Language is essential and contributes to the success and integrity of the festival. Therefore, we expect our staff, volunteers, artists, speakers and traders to make every effort to communicate bilingually wherever possible. This motive extends to our online presence as a company. Our website offers the entirety of its content in both English and Welsh. The language selection tool is prominently displayed above the main menu bar on the home page. Additionally, we aim to make the majority our on-site signage bilingual and the festival programme includes a dedicated section that provides a learner\u2019s guide to Welsh vocabulary and phrases. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This policy ensures that customers, staff and attendees are met with an equal and welcoming experience in both Welsh and English at Between The Trees. We must acknowledge that some people may not speak, nor know of any Welsh language at all, even though they may be residents in Wales, so we encourage speaking at a calm, slower pace and with a helpful and positive attitude. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In order to comply with this policy, BTT staff and volunteers are encouraged to use these suggested phrases\/principles which will provide a basic level of spoken Welsh at all BTT events.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We encourage crew and volunteers to prepare for Between The Trees by using the resource list below. We do not ask for fluency nor perfect speech, and appreciate that learning a new language can be hard and takes a lot of time. Therefore, we appreciate any level of effort that staff can make Between The Trees as inclusive as possible for all attendees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

BTT actively promotes the inclusion of Welsh language speaking musicians and organisations at its events. We aim to deliver bilingual sessions and workshops where ever possible and work with organisations and stakeholders who also promote bilingualism e.g Ballet Cymru, Live Music Now, TRAC etc. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
