In 2017, Welsh Government published the Welsh learning strategy for Wales, Cymraeg 2050: A million Welsh speakers. This is the Welsh Ministers’ strategy for the promotion and facilitation of the use of the Welsh language. It has been prepared in accordance with Section 78 of the Government of Wales Act 2006. This strategy supersedes A living language: a language for living – Welsh Language Strategy 2012–17, and its associated policy statement, A living language: a language for living – Moving forward. The Cymraeg 2050 Strategy sets out the Welsh Government’s long-term approach to achieving the target of a million Welsh speakers by 2050.

The document states that “the culture sector itself has an important part to play to support the provision of Welsh language activities, and to develop events, products and activities which celebrate and raise awareness of our unique Welsh culture. It should also ensure that the culture of the Welsh language and Wales are both incorporated into important events as a part of how we present ourselves to the wider world”

Mae’r ddogfen yn datgan bod “gan y sector diwylliant ei hun ran bwysig i’w chwarae i gefnogi’r ddarpariaeth o weithgareddau Cymraeg, ac i ddatblygu digwyddiadau, cynhyrchion a gweithgareddau sy’n dathlu a chodi ymwybyddiaeth o’n diwylliant Cymreig unigryw. Dylai hefyd sicrhau bod diwylliant yr iaith Gymraeg a Chymru yn cael eu hymgorffori mewn digwyddiadau pwysig fel rhan o’r modd yr ydym yn cyflwyno ein hunain i’r byd ehangach”.
